Web Development: What do Web Developers do?

Everything today is on the internet. You can bank, buy clothes and even learn a new language! It’s a good place to talk to interesting people, collaborate on projects or simply waste time. These days, the internet is the place to be. That’s why, being a web developer is like being an internet rock star!

So what is it that web developers actually do? Web developers are the creators of online experiences. This could mean making the beautiful parts of websites that people see. Or it could mean working behind the scenes to make sure that everything works correctly. In this article, I will talk about three types of developers: front-end developers, back-end developers and UX/UI designers.

Front-End Developers

I think that when many people think of a web developer, they think of the front-end developers. I know that I did when I was first learning about web development. That’s okay! Because their work is what most people see when they are surfing around on the internet.

Front-end developers work with languages like HTML, CSS and JavaScript to make the “front-end,” which basically just means the part that people see and directly interact with. These three languages are the main languages that are used to bring text, images, color and animations to make a website look and feel fun! The languages and practices of front-end development are constantly changing to make websites even more awesome. For this reason, front-end developers are constantly learning new things.

Back-End Developers

Back-end developers are the unsung heroes of the web development community. They are the ones that make sure your data and information are stored correctly. They are the ones that make databases and places that huge amounts of information can be kept.

Back-end developers use languages such as PHP, Java, JavaScript (like NodeJS) and Python to create the “back-end” of websites. They can store and manipulate data so that it is easy to get to and at the same time, stored safely. Like front-end developers, back-end developers need to be constantly exploring the new ways that back-end development is changing.

UX/UI Designers

UX/UI actually means User eXperience and User Interface. These designers create stunning visual and easily usable masterpieces that make people want to visit and interact with a website. They work with the front-end coding languages as well. However, their focus is mainly on how aesthetically pleasing and easily usable things are. This usually means working with applications like Adobe Photoshop and other awesome design tools to make visually stunning media. A UX/UI designer’s job is to make sure that when someone comes to a website, they have an awesome experience. Their goal is to give visitors something memorable (in a good way) when they visit a website.

The experience that users have depends a lot on the interface. The user interface is just basically anything that someone will interact with. UX/UI designers need to make an interface that not only functions perfectly, but is also pleasing to the eye and easy to understand. They are specialists in making website visitors feel comfortable and interested.

Apart, these three types of developers can do some interesting things. Together, they can make fantastic website experiences. Those experiences will keep website users coming back to visit time and again.

These are not the only types of developers out there. These are just the ones that I wanted to talk about. There are developers that develop mobile applications, game developers and so much more! Once you enter into the world of development you can really do whatever you want!
